Lower Extremity Rehabilitation Techniques Flashcards
What does cooling an injured site do to bloodflow?
It decreases it to reduce secondary tissue hypoxia from edema
What is hypoxia?
Low levels of oxygen in blood
How often do you apply an ice pack?
15-20 minutes, 2-4 times a day
What is increased swelling associated with?
Secondary tissue damage and motion deficits
What is edema?
Swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body’s tissue
How high should the limb be elevated?
At least 15 cm above the heart
What does elevating the limb do?
Facilitate venous and lymphatic drainage to prevent build up of edema
Should you avoid NSAIDs for stress fractures?
Yes
What is PFPS?
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
What can weakness in the pelvic core lead to?
Malalignment of the pelvis which can transmit to the lower extremity->hamstring injuries and achillies problems
Most common flexibility issues in runnes
Hamstrings, hip flexors, IT band, gastrocsoleus complex
Where does increased wear typically show on a normal running motion?
Lateral heel
Where does wear show on a shoe with overpronation?
Medial heel
What do you look for in a running assessment?
Symmetry, completeness of stride, and straight, upright posture
What are the five steps to the plantar fascia program?
-Frequent ice foot baths
-Golf ball massage the fleshy part of the foot, not the heel
-Night splinting
-Calf raises
-Maintainence of fitness with other modalities (cycling, swimming)
Progression of rehabilitation for ankle sprains should include:
-Increasing range of motion
-Progressive strengthening
-Proprioceptive training
-Running specific training
