most common cause of LBP
mostly from muscle strain or SD
cauda equina syndrome
medical emergency
need to be sent to the ER
spinal n. root compression L1-S5 normally due to massive disc protrusion, fx, or tumor that causes bowel or bladder dysfunction
need to surgically decompress ASAP
pain above the knee
direct injury to a specific area

degenerative dysfunction
pain below the knee
radiculopathy
spinal stenosis
cauda equina syndrome
associated piriformis syndrome (can pinch the common fibular n.)
most likely location for disc herniation
#1 b/w LV5 and SV1 (compresses S1 n root) #2 b/w LV4 and LV5 (compresses L5 n root)

Motor to TA
Patellar tendon reflex
sensory to medial foot
L5
EDL
no reflex
sensation of medial foot
S1
motor to peroneus longus
Achilles tendon DTR
sensation to lateral foot
tx for acute HNP
NO HVLA or ME
use indirect techniques
treat distally first
Subacute or chronic HNP
may use some direct treatments as pt may be able to tolerate more
still use MFR, OA etc
