Love Flashcards
biological theory
a materialistic theory that aims to ‘reduce’ love to a process in the human brain- process that can ONLY be explained in terms if biology
social constructivism
love refers to a set of social behaviours and practices that have a history (Valentines day, marriage, wedding ceremonies?)
lust
not focused on only one partner
attraction
passionate love, focused on one person
attachment
companionate love- long term association for parenting
heteronormative
the assumption that heterosexuality is the natural or preferred sexual orientation, and that any other sexual orientation is deviant
amatonormative
the idea that a romantic relationship is a necessary component of a good life, conversely that you have failed at life if you don’t find an enduring romance
gender stereotype
oversimplified assumptions about people based on their gender (ex: woman want monogamy- one partner)
patriarchy
the false idea that men (by nature) ought to have more power than women
ideology
a system of ideas that serves to uphold existing social relations rather than getting at the truth, (men, upper classes, racial elite)
dual nature theory
the idea that love is both biological and social (yes-and-no)
false dichotomy
it sets up two options where there is a third (ex: “one is either monogamous or promiscuous”)
necessary and sufficient conditions
either biology or the social is sufficient on its own (EX: oxygen is a necessary condition for starting a fire, but not sufficient since you also need something flammable to ignite fire)
polyamory
the practice of engaging in multiple romantic (and typically sexual) relationships, with the consent of all the people involved
