Loudspeakers Flashcards
what are the different transducer types
moving coil
ribbon
electrostatic
piezoelectric
what is a moving coil
the classic electrodynamic loudspeaker
made up of a moving coil and a permanent magnet
what is a ribbon transducer
a light corrugate aluminium ribbon clamped together between 2 magnetic poles
what is an electrostatic transducer
a drive consisting of a large diaphragm, placed between 2 rigid plates which are perforated to allow sounds to pas through them
what is a piezoelectric transducer
takes advantage of crystalline materials, which when mechanically deformed generate electricity.
what is a baffle
front face of the speaker which serves as mounting surface for speaker driver units
what is a loading
how the enclosure or coupled equipment causes the speaker driver to physically react
what is the purpose of a baffle
The baffle forms the front face of the speaker and serves as the mounting surface for the tweeter, woofer and subwoofer. Along with holding the drivers in place, the baffle also prevents sound from the front and the back of the drivers from colliding and causing noise interference.
what is a dople
describes a polar pattern which consists of 2 lobes with equal radiation forwards and backwards
what is a folded baffle
flat baffles can be loaded to reduce apparent size but maintain the same loading characteristics as an unfolded baffle of similar surface area
what is a sealed enclosure
is in essence a closed box, has a better low end response than a flat baffle
cone size and volume of air box has a bearing on the resonant frequency
what is a vented enclosure
ducted port envlosure
