A

SYMBOL OF THE BEAST TO INTRODUCE FEAR

  • idea of ‘beastie’ suggested by a littlun - young, experiences fear easily

SIMON IS THE ONLY BOY WHO UNDERSTANDS MANKIND

C v S point 2

A

CIVILISED VALUES FADE

  • clothing and cleanliness degenerate -> littluns go to the toilet everywhere
  • jacks hunting at first fits in with civilisation- but the ‘fierce exhilaration’ of hunting takes over sensible behaviour-> instinct — ‘his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling’

C V S POINT 3

A

CONCH DESTRUCTION REPRESENTS VICTORY OF BARBARITY OVER CIVILISATION

  • everyone takes part in simons death, frenzied killing ‘tearing of teeth and claws’
  • roger ‘sharpens a stick at both ends’
  • golding implies that savagery is a more basic human instinct than civilisation
  • urge to behave morally is taught by society- savagery is what we are born with
17
Q

Law and order point 1

A

THE SIGNAL FIRE

  • it aids rescue- at the start their first fire burns out of control -‘you got your small fire alright’
  • golding uses the symbolism of the fire to foreshadow the boys descent into savagery
  • fire becomes a paradox of both rescue and destruction —> it becomes neglected and misused
  • jack smokes Ralph out with a savage fire - bringing destruction, distorted views of what is sensible
18
Q

Law and order point 2

A

WAR PAINT
- turning point - jack and tribe put on war paint- ‘ the mask was a thing of its own, behind which jack hid, liberated from shame and self consciousness’
He is no longer a little boy
- at first jacks hunting was a way of getting vital meat for the boys but now its bloodlust-> hinting is a way of life

19
Q

Law and order point 3

A

NAVAL OFFICER

  • law+order reiterated when civilisation has disintegrated- boys seen from an adults view
  • naval officer @end appears in white - AND even though the boys have been saved from their trauma golding poses the question of whether or not human kind as a whole can be saved
  • MICROCOSM - the officer interrupting the boys manhunt will be bringing them back to a place where adults are hunting each other in the same implacable way
  • law and order is represented through the naval officer- ironically he is fighting a barbaric war of his own
