What are the appropriate investigations for amniotic fluid embolism and what results would confirm this?
Amniotic fluid embolism is a clinical diagnosis so no investigations are necessary
What investigations are done for anaemia in pregnancy?
Pregnant women are screened for anaemia the booking visit (often 8-10 weeks) and at 28 weeks
What investigations are done for Asherman’s Syndrome and what results are expected?
Hysteroscopy for diagnosis (adhesions visible in uterus)
Sonohysterography for extent of scar formation
What investigations are done for Bartholin’s Cyst/Abscess and what results are expected?
Cyst – Biopsy may be needed to exclude vulval malignancy (esp >40y)
Abscess – swab of the pus draining for culture + Abx sensitivities
- (send specific swabs for chlamydia and gonorrhoea)
What investigations are done for cervical cancer/CIN and what results are expected?
Urgent cancer referral for colposcopy
- Ulceration
- Inflammation
- Bleeding
- Visible tumour
What investigation is used for depression in pregnancy and what are its features?
Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale
- 10 items, max score 30
- Indicates how mum has felt over last week
- Score >13 = ‘depressive illness of varying severity’
- Sensitivity and specificity >90%
- Includes a question about self-harm
