Lord Of The Flies- themes and symbols Flashcards
The island: “dazzling beach” “incredible pool”
Adjectives at beginning make its sound lovely and like paradise or edenic
“Here was a coral island”
Links to books the boys would’ve read, making it seem adventurous and fun
“The conch doesn’t count at this end of the island”
Represents the destruction of mankind and civilisation as we get into the book and how priorities have changed to hunting, links to being tempted by evil which is also edenic
The fire: “flames crept as a jaguar”
Personification, sly, quiet into furious and aggressive predator
The fire: what could it represent
Smoke was a signal, also kept the boys warm, they could cook, comforting (“who let the fire go out?” Was important to Ralph) represents civilisation and then gets out of hand when the society falls apart and spreads across the island
The fire: at the start it killed a boy, what could this mean?
Foreshadows how when things get out of hand more boys will die
The fire: “racing forward like a tide”
Simile, shows it’s power and strength
The fire: what’s it a metaphor for?
Human nature as the destructive element needs to be controlled, it seems easy to start and control but easily gets out of hand
