Lord Of The Flies Quotes Flashcards
“I was the only boy in our school what had asthma”
Piggy speaking to Ralph in the first chapter.
A02- Piggy uses incorrect English, indicating his upbringing. His language singles him out from the other boys.
A03- Piggy cannot run fast because of his asthma, which makes him more vulnerable as he can’t escape from predators. Piggy is weak and reliant on other people to keep safe. Throughout the novel it is obvious that Piggy is a weak social outcast, and his death is symbolic.
“Ralph wept for the end of innocence, for the darkness of man’s heart…..and a true, wise friend called Piggy”
Very end of the novel. Ralph breaks down when the officer comes to rescue them. He “weeps” for Piggy, someone who he dismissed and was rude too in the beginning, but then grew to rely on, and he grieves for him after his death. Friendship is long lasting.
A02- the adjectives used to describe Piggy “true” and “wise” are positive and loving, showing how highly Ralph thinks of him after his death.
A03- Jesus wept (the shortest verse in the Bible) for his friend Lazarus. Jesus arrived too late to save him from his death. Jesus wept for him, and then resurrected him. This could apply to Ralph when he is weeping for Piggy, except he can’t resurrect him, as much as he wishes he could.
