Describe the events in Chapter 1
“the sound of the shell”
Boys land on the island
Ralph finds the conch and blows it, which groups everyone
Simon faints near the platform where the boys are gathering
Ralph is elected at chief over Jack, choir is appointed hunters with Jack in charge
Ralph, Jack and Simon goes out to explore the island
Comes across a pig on the way back but is unable to kill it
Describe the events in Chapter 2
“Fire on the mountain”
Three explorers come back and Ralph blows the conch to call a meeting
Younger boys express their concerns about a “beastie” on the island
Boys start a fire to attract the attention of passing ships
Fire burns out of control
Piggy tells the boys to “act proper” and discovers the boy with the birthmark has disappeared
Describe the events in Chapter 3
“Huts on the beach”
Jack goes pig hunting - unsuccessful
Ralph tries to build shelters but does not receive any help apart from Simon
Hunters use the excuse of hunting to not do work
Simon goes off into the forest on his own to pick fruits
Describe the events in Chapter 4
“Painted faces and long hair”
Roger and Maurice bully the littleuns by destroying their sand castles; Roger throws stones close to Henry
Jack paints his face and goes hunting
Ralph sees ship on the horizon but discovers the fire is out
Hunters return with a dead pig
Ralph is angry at Jack and Piggy backs him up, but Jack smashes a lens in Piggy’s glasses
Ralph calls for a meeting and walk down alone
Describe the events in Chapter 5
“Beast from water”
Ralph lays down rules for behaviour
Discussion turns to the beast, Jack and Piggy dismiss the idea
Opinions of Piggy and Simon are ignored
Jack and Ralph further disagrees and the meeting ends
Simon and Piggy fears what Jack is capable of and urge Ralph to remain as leader
Describe the events in Chapter 6
“Beast from air”
Dead parachutist falls on the island
Sam and Eric tend to the fire and mistake the parachutist for the beast
At the meeting Jack suggests to hunt the beast and ridicules the importance of the conch
Older boys, except Piggy, set off to find the beast
Ralph goes first to explore, soon joined by Jack
Discovers the end of the island would be a good place for a fort(castle rock)
Others reluctantly go on with the journey
Describe the events in Chapter 7
“Shadows and tall trees”
Everyone goes to relight the fire
Jack discovers the tracks of a wild boar and the group hunts it
The hunt is reenacted with Robert as the pig and gets hurt
Ralph, Jack and Roger hunt for the beast, discovers the dead parachutist and assumes it is the beast
They are terrified and run
Describe the events in Chapter 8
“Gift for the darkness”
Jack uses the conch to call an assembly and the 3 report what they have seen
Jack tries to overthrow Ralph but fails
Fire is relit by the platform
Jack goes with his hunters to kill pigs, they kill one and puts its head on a spike for the beast
Everyone is invited to the feast
Simon has a conversation with the pig’s head and faints
Describe the events in Chapter 9
“A view to a death”
Simon sees the dead parachutist and discovers the truth about the beast, heads off to tell the others
Ralph and Piggy joins in the feast
Jack asks who will join his tribe and argues with Ralph
Jack’s tribe does their dance and Simon stumbles into the circle
Boys mistakes Simon for the beast and kills him
Bodies of Simon and the parachutist are washed out to sea
Describe the events in Chapter 10
“The shell and the glasses”
Piggy and Ralph talkes about the events last night, later joined by Sam and Eric; the boys lie to each other about their involvement
Jack and his hunters set up camp at the far end of the island
Some of Jack’s tribe raids Ralph’s group and steals Piggy’s glasses
Describe the events in Chapter 11
“Castle rock”
Ralph is unable to relight the fire
They go to castle rock to confront Jack and his hunters
Roger leans on the lever which drops a huge rock towards Piggy
Piggy dies and the conch is destroyed
Sam and Eric are captured and tortured to join the tribe
Ralph escapes while hunters hurl spears in his direction
Describe the events in Chapter 12
“Cry of the hunters”
Hides and tries to avoid danger
Encounters the Lord of the flies and experiences fear and anger, takes the spear that supports it
Goes to castle rock and speaks to Sam and Eric, who informs him that he will be hunted
Sam and Eric is tortured to reveal Ralph’s location
Jack sets the island on fire to smoke Ralph out
Smoke is seen by a passing ship
Everyone sees a naval officer and gets rescued
