Q

How does Golding show the theme that there is evil in everyone through Ralph?

A

By involving Ralph, the hero, in acts of evil. E.g. - laughing at Piggy or Simon/ gnawing at his meat “like a wolf”/ wounds a pig/ takes part in the dance when Simon is killed. But even though he recognises it in himself, he tries to fight it - This represents man’s struggle against evil.

Q

How do Ralph’s emotions show the story changing from one of exciting adventure, into one of terrifying violence?

A

At first, Ralph is excited because there are no grown-ups and he is confident that the adults will rescue them - he trusts the civilised world.

Later on, he feels the “wearisomeness” of the island. He begins to feel insecure and his old “lawful world” begins to slip away.

His deepest despair is at the end when the boys are rescued. He realises that his innocent view of a fair and decent world is lost forever.

Q

What shows Piggy’s characteristic of proper behaviour?

A

He tries to maintain rules and to impose a civilised society. This is shown where he is always reminding the others of the purpose of the conch, and that Ralph is chief. He also tries to do the right thing by telling Jack to give him his glasses back, which shows that he can also be brave. He also wonders what grown-ups would say and he longs for the order and structure that adults impose.

His growing obsession with hunting.

29

34
Q

Name a quote which shows Simon is solitary.

A

35
Q

How does Golding present the theme of evil through Simon?

A

Simon represents the goodness inside all humans. His weakness shows that, although we all have good in us, the evil is stronger.

36
Q

How is it shown that Simon is weaker than some of the others?

A

He is not as old or as tall as the big boys, hie is a “skinny, vivid” boy, and he doesn’t like speaking aloud in front of the others. But most importantly, his failure to express himself reminds the reader that he is a young boy struggling to express a complicated idea. The others laugh at him, and Piggy says he’s “cracked” - Their attitude towards him hints that they won’t accept that the beast is inside them in time to control it.

37
Q

How does Golding present the theme of fear through Simon?

A

Simon recognises that the real thing to fear is themselves. The other boys savagely kill him when he tries to tell them this. This is ironic - their fear of the beast causes them to kill the person who could tell them that the beast isn’t real.

38
Q

How is Simon presented in a religious way?

A

He represents a figure similar to Jesus - He never harms anyone, he handed out food to the littluns, me made a prediction about the future, and he dies because he told the others the truth.

Some of his descriptions, like how he seemed to turn silver and “marble”, and the water surrounds his head with “brightness” like a halo. Also his secret place in the forest is full of candle buds, representing candles in a peaceful church.

39
Q

How does Golding use pathetic fallacy through Simon?

A

After Simon’s death, the weather became very calm and the sea gently took his body away - It’s as if nature is mourning Simon’s death. It is pathetic fallacy because Golding describes nature as if it has human feelings and emotions.

40

That the boys can’t go back to being civilised. It presented the themes of evil and savagery.

A

Power, Fear, Savagery

46
