The importance of science

As it is scientific knowledge that the glasses will create a fire, and the fire is very important because it is their only tie to civilization

Glasses represent intellect and rationality because, many require glasses for reading, and because, specific to the story, the glasses are worn by the most rational person, Piggy. Therefore, when one of the specs is ruined, it symbolizes the fact that rationality and intellect is being diminished.
