Ralph
Elected leader at the beginning of the book and tries to build order on the island, he represents civilizing instinct
Jack
Antagonist, jack becomes leader of the hunters and wants to be in Ralph’s position of leader, jack represents the evil and barbaric in human kind
Simon
A shy sensitive guy, in ways he is the only good character in the book and is looked at as the god figure to the readers
Piggy
Ralph’s right hand man, piggy represents the scientific and rational side of civilization
Roger
Jacks right hand man, a cruel older boy who brutalizes the littluns and kills piggy with a huge rock
Sam and Eric
A pair of twin closely allied with Ralph and Piggy, at the end of the book they fall victim to jacks manipulation and hunt Ralph
The lord of the flies
The name given to the dead pigs head as jack hangs it on a stake as an offering to the beast. It symbolizes power and evil and take over jacks tribe

We see this through Ralph’s and jacks tribes
The conch shell
This shell was used to call meetings and was passed around so people could have a turn to talk. It symbolizes order
Piggy’s glasses
These glasses symbolize the power of science and intellectual endeavour in society
The signal fire
It symbolizes the hope the boys have to be rescued and once the fire burns down the boys have turned to savagery
The beast
An imaginary monster that all the boys are scared of, only Simon realizes that there is no beast but he dies to jacks tribe before he can tell anyone
