Overview
- head of the capulet household and people look up to him
- he hosts the capulet party and fuels the conflict between the montague and capulets
- as capulet usually gets his own way he is shocked that Juliet refuses to obey his order
- regrets his anger at the end of the okay when he and montague ask for forgiveness and repent
Powerful
As the head of he capulet-household, capuler is powerful. At his party, Tybalt tells Capulet that Romeo is there and he is dishonouring the family name - Capulert rebukes Tybalt and says Romes is a guest and they must beat their guests kindly. This angers Tybalt but he does what he is told reluctantly
Evidence: ‘Content thee, gentle coz. Let him alone… it is my will’
Analysis: shows he is powerful as he tells the fiery Tybalt to leave Romeo alone. Further on in his speech he gets angry when Tybalt questions him. This illustrates capulets’ power as he is in charge of a reputable household
Stubborn
How: capulet shows his stubbornness as he is shocked by his daughter’s refusal to marry Paris and therefore threatens to disown her for displeasing him.
Evidence: ‘ i tell thee what: get thee to church a’ Thursday or never after look me in the face’
Analysis: this shows how stubborn capulet is as he is telling Juliet that if she doesn’t obey him, she will no longer be a part of his family. The use of the ‘i’ illustrates how authoritative capulet is, as it is only his opinion that matters
