longitudinal & transverse waves Flashcards
what are longitudinal and transverse waves?[1]
2 different kinds of waves
how does a transverse wave move?[3]
the medium that is carrying the energy moves right angled/ PERPENDICULAR compared to the direction of the energy transfer
up and down
how does a longitudinal wave move?[3]
the medium that is carrying the energy moves in the same direction/ PARALLEL compared to the direction of the energy transfer
give 3 examples of a medium[3]
air
water
solid
why are waves in water transverse waves?[3]
in water waves, the ripples on the surface of a (e.g.) pond are transverse because the individual water particles move up and down perpendicular to the direction of the wave as the wave passes by.
why are sound waves longitudinal waves?[5]
in sound waves, if (e.g.) music is played, the air molecules compress and rarefy in the direction of the sound traveling. This compression and rarefaction create areas of high and low pressures, which our ears detect as sound.
what are rarefactions in longitudinal waves?[1]
a region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are furthest apart.
what are rarefactions in longitudinal waves?[1]
a region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are
what causes compressions and rarefactions?[1]
the longitudinal movement of air molecules produces pressure fluctuations
