Nationalism, Imperialism and Militarism
Nationalism
an excessive love for your country or for your country to be independent
Imperialism
the desire for your country to own an empire
Militarism
the building up of a countries armed forces
How did nationalism contribute to WW1?
Tensions grew between two countries due to a country wanting greater power than they already have.
How did imperialism contribute to WW1?
As countries like Britain and France expanded their empires, it resulted in increased tensions among European countries.
How did militarism contribute to WW1?
Countries became more involved in policies created from the government. As a result, tensions may form between two countries.
SHORT TERM
The formation of the Alliance Systems
Triple Entente
Britain, France and Russia
Triple Alliance
Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy
Why are alliances dangerous and can cause a world war?
Countries get dragged into a war to help other countries.
E.g. Russia was dragged in to help Serbia.
Germany joined to help Austria-Hungary
The Arms Race
a race between nations to develop more weapons than the other
All countries introduced conscription apart from Britain.
Britain built up its navy and constructed new battleships. Britain battleships - Dreadnoughts(meaning fear nothing)
Mobilisation plans
One country mobilised, they all did - believing the country to attack first would win
TRIGGER CAUSES
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo by the Black Hand Serbian terrorist organisation.
Schlieffen Plan
Germany’s plan to attack France (through Belgium) (while Russia mobilised its army) and then attack Russia.
