Long Term Effects Flashcards

1
Q

What is muscle hypertrophy?

A

Muscle hypertrophy involves increasing muscle size, typically through strength training. Putting strain on the muscles through working out causes the body to repair them, resulting in an increase in muscle fibres. Having more muscle fibres will lead to greater strength and muscle size.

Q

What is heart hypertrophy?

A

A fundamental component of exercise-induced remodelling is physiological cardiac hypertrophy, a process that increases muscle mass by increasing cardiac myocyte size.

Q

What is increased stroke volume?

A

During exercise your heart typically beats faster so that more blood gets out to your body. Your heart can also increase its stroke volume by pumping more forcefully or increasing the amount of blood that fills the left ventricle before it pumps.

Q

Why does your resting heart rate decrease from long term exercise?

A

Exercise strengthens the heart muscle. It allows it to pump a greater amount of blood with each heartbeat. More oxygen is also going to the muscles. This means the heart beats fewer times per minute that it would in a non athlete.

Q

How does exercise increase vital capacity?

A

When physically active, your heart and lungs work harder to supply the additional oxygen your muscles demand.

Q

Why is there an increase of alveoli due to exercise?

A

During exercise, the gas exchange requirements of the lung increase due to increased oxygen consumption and increased carbon dioxide production. In addition, both the respiratory rate and tidal volume increase, hence alveolar ventilation also increases.

Q

Why is there an increase in the bone density due to exercise?

A

When you exercise regularly, your bone adapts by building more horn and becoming denser.
