Long term condition
One that cannot currently be cured but can be controlled with the use of medication and or other therapies .
LTCs can be :
1- disabling
2- cause intense pain
3- cause embarrassment
4- cause stigma
LTCs common examples
1- Arthritis - 8.5 m (1 in 5 UK adults )
2- Asthma 3.4 m
3- Diabetes mellitus ( 4m )
Embodiment
Living through and with the physical body
Significance of diagnosis
Provides access to the sick role
1- not imagining it
2- acceptance by family and friends
3- access to welfare benefits , support groups , sick leave and treatments and information
Diagnosis brings new uncertainties
1 - social ( employment , maintaining relationships and finance )
2- clinical ( variable rate of deterioration )
3- diagnosis uncertainty (epilepsy)
4- psychosocial ( self and identity )
Biographical disruption
The destabilisation and questioning of identity after the onset of a long term condition and begin to ask questions like “ who j am , where i am going “ etc

3 aspects :
1- distribution of taken for granted assumptions / behaviour about body
2- disruption to biography
3- response to disruption
