London Forces Flashcards
1
Q
How do London forces work
A
Electrons (in molecules) are in constant motion
At any given time their distribution might be uneven
This causes an instantaneous dipole
This induces a dipole on the neighbouring molecule
This causes further dipoles throughout the whole molecule
2
Q
How does the Mr affect the London forces
A
The more the electrons, the larger the instantaneous and induced dipole, the greater the induced dipole-dipole interaction, the stronger the attractive forces between molecules, more energy is needed to overcome them
