London Flashcards
London vs living space start
Living space - fragility of hope/faith - hopeful tone as dharker talks about suffering of the people who have made a living space in slums of Mumbai
London - starts with iambic tetrameter - harsh tone - Blake discusses the suffering of the poor people during a time where power was in control
Similarities between poems
Both comment on wealth distribution being unfair and show hardships of people living in less ideal situations, two distinct perspectives
Rich in control
Underline obvious divide between rich and poor and how rich disregards poor ‘there are just not enough’ ‘slanted universe’
Similarly Blake calls out powerful institutions as the monarchy and church for not doing anything to help lower class
Although each poems deals with poverty and place thier different
Context give each poems conflicting meaning
Structure in both poem
Living space - squeezed stanza irregular shows irregfularlyty of peoples lives ‘bright, thin walls of faith’ keeps them there -> enjambent shows overpopulation and words spilling is instable
London - repetitive structure mirrors repetitive nature of political systems and shows lack of escape and variation
Idea of trappedness
Living space - ‘clutch at open seams’ thin walls shows hope, nails present chance for a better future
London - ‘mind forged manacles’ shows they know they will never escape poverty, critical tone
‘Infants cry of fear’
Child labour
‘I wonder thro each chartered street near where the charted themes does flow’
‘Runs in blood down palace walls’
‘Hung over dark edge of slanted universe’ - inequality and imbalance
