Logical Reasoning II Flashcards
With Main Point Questions, be careful…
Even if an answer choice must be true according to the stimulus, if it fails to capture the main point it cannot be correct.
Every MP Questions contains…
an argument. You should identify the conclusion. The correct answer will be rephrasing of the main conclusion.
2 Incorrect Answers: Main Point Questions
- Answers that are true but do not encapsulate the author’s point.
- Answers the repeat premises of the argument.
If an argument contains two conclusions…
you will be forced to identify which one is the main conclusion and which one is the subsidiary conclusion.
Any conditional statement consists…
of at least one sufficient condition and at least one necessary condition.
Sufficient Condition
an event whose occurrence indicates that a necessary condition must also occur.
Necessary Conditon
an event whose occurrence is required in order for a sufficient condition to occur.
If someone gets an A on the test, then they must have studied.
S: A
N: must have studied
The sufficient condition does not…
make the necessary condition occur. The A does not make studying occur.
To introduce a sufficient condition:
- If
- When
- Whenever
- Every
- All
- Any
- People who
- In order to
To introduce a necessary condition:
- Then
- Only
- Only if
- Must
- Required
- Unless
- Except
- Until
- Without
Use the double arrow when:
- If and only if
- Vice versa
- Repeating and reversing (“If A attends then B attends, and if B attends then A attends”).
Weaken Questions
- Stimulus will almost always contain an argument.
- Focus on the conclusion.
- Information in stimulus is suspect.
- Yield strong prephrases.
- Answer choices accepted as given, even if they include “new” information.
The key to weakening an argument…
is to attack the conclusion.
“Would this answer choice make the author reconsider his/her position or force the author to respond?” If so, you have the correct answer.
Personalizing
Most students perform considerably better when they see the argument from their perspective.
Would you use answer A or B to respond?
