logical problem of evil Flashcards
problem of evil as a logical problem
a priori argument
If God is omnipotent and chooses not to stop evil then he is not benevolent. If God is benevolent and cant stop evil then he is not omnipotent. If God is not benevolent or omnipotent, then he is not truly God. Therefore God does not exist.
logical problem challenges belief: god cannot be all powerful
he would have created a world that did not have the potential to become evil or a world that didn’t suffer from natural disasters. He would be able to prevent evil and suffering but as they exist he cannot be all powerful
logical problem challenges belief: god cannot be omnibenevolent
would have loved and cared for his creation enough to want to prevent and avoid its suffering
logical problem challenges belief: inconsistency
god knows about evil as he is omniscient, is wholly good an is powerful enough to prevent evil as he’s omnipotent yet evil exists
CA for logical problem: W.P. Aston
cannot understand God as human perspective limited, only perceive part of what may be the full picture so can’t argue that this counts either for or against God
CA for logical problem: Plantinga
god chooses to limit himself to allow genuine freewill
CA for logical problem: good reasons for evil top continue
may be a good outcome from the result of evil. pain and disease necessary for development of sympathy, courage and cures
CA for logical problem: good can’t exist without evil
without evil we wouldn’t have any concept of what good is
