Ad hominem
A distraction that attacks an opponent’s character when a character is irrelevant to the argument.
Tu Quoque
Irrelevantly appealing to supposed hypocrisy between arguments and actions.
Straw Man
Misrepresents or hyperbolizes an opponent’s position to make it easier to defeat.
Red Herring
A distraction that ultimately leads away from the truth of the matter.
Slippery Slope
Assumes that taking step ‘A’ will lead to subsequent steps that cannot be prevented.
Black or White
Two alternative states are presented as the only possibilities, when in fact more possibilities exist.
False Cause
Occurs when the alleged cause fails to be related to, or to produce the effect stated.
Loaded Question
The assumption built into it so that it cannot be answered without making one appear guilty.
Bandwagon
Assumes that because something is popular, it is therefore good, correct, or desirable.
Anecdotal
Using personal experience or an isolated example instead of a valid argument especially to dismiss statistics.
Appeal to Authority
A speaker or writer seeks to persuade not by giving evidence but by appealing to the respect people have for a famous person or institution.
Appeal to Emotion
Using manipulative emotion instead of the valid argument to convince.
Texas Sharpshooter
Jumping to the conclusion.
Personal Incredulity
Arguing that because something is difficult to understand it must necessarily be untrue.
Genetic Fallacy
Questions revolving around;
where it began,
how it began,
or who began it.
