Ad Hominem
Disagreeing with an opponent because of their character or personality
Ex: shouldn’t listen to Molly because she’s an arrogant horse
Hasty Generalization
Making assumptions about a person or group of people based on insufficient evidence or examples
Ex: “all animals are enslaved”
“all men are evil”
Red Herring
Goes off on a tangent not immediately related to the argument at hand;
Intent is to distract
Appeal to Authority
Referring to famous or influential people in order to substantiate a claim
Ex: “Our leader Comrade Napoleon”
False Cause and Effect/ Post Hoc
Asserts that since (A) occurred before (B), A must have caused B; no necessary causal relation between he two events
Ex: blames snowball for windmill failure
False Dichotomy
Arguer pretends listener only has two options, when they really have more.
Ex: support Napoleon or you want Mr. Jones to return
