Logic Fallacy Flashcards
Affirming the consequent
When an implication is read the wrong way.
If the wind is strong, the clothes dry quickly.
The clothes have dried quickly, therefore the wind must be strong.
Denying the antecedent
Misinterpreting an implication as an equivalence
The wind is strong, the clothes dry quickly.
However, the wind is gentle, so the clothes will take a long time to dry.
Begging the question / circular argument
A conclusion derived from itself.
Undistributed middle
Where the middle term does not (necessarily) refer to the same thing in both cases.
Some Cretans are liars. Some Cretans are Christians.
Therefore some Christians are liars.
Argument ad hominem
Denying the claim by attacking the person instead of the evidence.
Eg. He is a liar, therefore this isn’t true.
