What is a statement?
A sentence that is either true or false
Examples of sentences that are not statements are?
question, command, or nonsense
What is a self-supporting statement?
a statement whose truth value can be determined from the statement itself
Example of self supporting statements are a?
self reports, statements that are true or false by logical structure(tautology + self contradiction) and statements that are true or false by definition
what is a self report?
I believe that Jesus is the son of God
Statements that are true or false by logical structure are?
True by logical structure-Tautology- Jesus is the son of God or he is not the son of God
False by logical structure- Self contradiction- Jesus is the son of God and he is not the son of God
Statements that are true or false by definition are?
True by definition- All triangles are three sided figures
False by definition- This triangle is an octagon
What is a supported statement?
a statement whose truth value depends on evidence or information from outside itself
Supported statement examples are?
Supported by authority, experience or observation, and deduction
What is a consistent statement?
When two statements can be true at the same time
What is an inconsistent statement?
When there is conflict between two statements
What is implication?
the truth of one requires the truth of another
What is logical equivalence?
when two statements imply one another- so both must be true or both must be false
What is independence?
the truth or falsity of one statement has nothing to do with the truth or falsity of the other
What is a real disagreement?
an actual inconsistency they cannot both be true at the same time
