Logic Argument Fallacie Flashcards
What is a fallacy
A fallacy is the use of invalid, or otherwise faulty reasoning in the construction of an argument
What is a logical fallacy
Any kind of error in reasoning that renders and argument invalid. I.e. the false cause: when someone incorrectly identifies the cause of something. Such as dinosaurs became extinct because they ate vegetables (correlation does not = causation).
Or false dilemma - the false assumption that there is only and either or answer
What does “a posteriori” mean
Means that knowledge comes after (posterior to) experince
What does “a priori” mean
Knowledge comes before experience
What is a rhetorical question
Question asked not to seek an answer, but to convey something unstated
What to look for in an argument
Propositions are statement’s capable of being true or false
Conclusions are factors like therefore, so, it must be
Premises are factors like, because, firstly, since
What are inductive arguments
These arguments takes the premises as evidence that predicts a conclusion
What is a deductive argument
The premises logically guarantee the conclusion. This makes the argument valid. If A=B then B=C.
A sound argument means however the premises must be true whilst still being valid
