Log 2 - Infection Control Flashcards
What is an infection
The invasion of the body’s natural barriers by microscopic organisms, bacterial, fungal, viral or parasitic - which multiply to create symptoms
Methods Infections Spread
- Airborne Droplets
2. Hand to hand - skin to skin contact
What is a Pandemic
Occurs when a new strain of influenza virus spreads from person to person throughout the world
What is opportunistic infection
when a bacterium or virus that causes a particular infection and may not be harmful to a healthy individual, puts at greater risk people with suppressed immune systems
Hand Washing - 3 types
- Social - use of liquid or bar soap covers needed
- Hygienic - use of antibacterial liquid or alcohol-based hand antiseptics (before and after every patient) 20-30 seconds at a time
- Surgical scrub
Sterilization
All forms of microbial life are completely eliminated or destroyed
Disinfection definition
Reduces the number of vegetative micro-organisms but is not necessarily fully effective against bacterial spores or viruses.
Low Level Disinfection
95% water combined with 5% household bleach
Intermediate Level Disinfection
70% Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) and ethyl alcohol
High Level Disinfection
Hydrogen peroxide 3%
