Locust belong to family of grasshoppers and have a life of 90 days

- Favourable weather conditions
- Good rainfall - Leading to good vegetation, hence attractive for locusts
- Cyclones in Oman and Yemen provided damp soil for locusts to breed
- Low pressure in Bay of Bengal strenthened the westerlies towards South Asia

- Locust warning organised under Min. Agriculture (nodal ministry)
- 200 locust circle offices have been setup

- Active role of International organisations - WMO, WHO, UNEP
