250 families, having very few around lowered the risk of attack and made it easier to tell when an intruder arrives

so Mary could be easily swapped to the safer castle encase of an attack or rebellion as the castle has more protection. it was only 2 miles from SML
why was having a lot of land surrounding the area both good and bad?
it was hard as it means it was hard to protect and defend it all, however it meant you could see and intruder for miles
