Localization Flashcards
FMRI
It shows actual brain activity & indicates which areas of the brain are active when engaged in a behavior.
MRI
shows 3D strucure of the brain
PET scan
It’s based on the assumption that areas of high radioactivity are associated with brain activity.
Localization
It’s a theory that specific parts of the brain are responsible for specific behaviors or cognitive processes.
H.M Case Study
When HM was 7 years old, he fell off his bike and hit his head. Thinking nothing of it, HM, went on with his life until he started to have severe seizures at the age of 10. At 27, it became so bad where H.M could not live a normal life and the medication did not help. With the approval of H.M and his parents, neurosurgeon Dr.William performed an experimental surgery where he removed parts of his temporal lobe and his hippocampus on both sides of his brain. After the operation, HM woke up and remembered his childhood very well and his personality was the same but he suffered from anterograde amnesia - he was no longer able to transfer his short term memory into long term memory. The researchers compared an MRI of H.Ms brain before the surgery and after the surgery and they found that the parts with the most damage were the temporal lobe and the hippocampus. The researchers concluded that the hippocampus plays a crucial role in transferring short term memory to long term.
Retrograde amnesia
can’t recall anything before the amnesia but can form new memories.
Anterograde amnesia
can recall anything before amnesia but can’t form new memories after the amnesia - cant transfer short term memory to long term.
