Localistaion Of Brain Function Flashcards
Define Localisation of function
The theory that specific areas of the brain are associated with particular physical and psychological functions
Motor cortex
- function and location
- responsible for the generation of voluntary motor movements
- located in the frontal lobe
Somatosensory cortex
- function and location
- detects sensory events arising from different regions of the body - produces sensations of the skin, touch, pressure, pain
- located in the parietal lobe
Auditory cortex
- function and location
- concerned with hearing, responsible for analysing and processing acoustic information
- located in the temporal lobe
Visual cortex
- function and location
- receives and processes visual information eg colour, shape
- located in the occipital lobe
Broca’s area -
Function and location
- responsible for speech production
- located in the left hemisphere
Wernickes area
Function and location
- responsible for language comprehension
- located on the left hemisphere
What does the left hemisphere do
- language centre of the brain
- controls the right side of the body
- receives information from the right visual field
What does the right hemisphere do
- focuses on Visio - spatial tasks
- controls left side of the body
- receives information from the right visual field
Define split brain
The two hemispheres of the brain are connected by a bundle of fibres known as the corpus callosum
- a commissurotomy is the division of Athena two hemispheres by surgery, which has occasionally been done to improve epilepsy
