Localisation of Function STUDIES Flashcards
Broca 1865 (language production)
Found that expressive aphasia patients suffered from damage to a particular area. This supports localisation of function as language is produced by a specific part.
Wernicke (language reception)
Found that receptive aphasia patients suffered from damage to a particular area. This supports localisation of function as language is processed in a particular area.
Dejerine 1892
Discovered a patient with an intact Wernicke’s area, intact auditory system but problems understanding speech due to a damaged connection. Contradicts LOF but provides understanding of non damaged patients.
Dronkers et al 2007
Used hi-res MRI to investigate Broca’s patients, other areas were found to be damaged –Broca’s area damage produces short term speech disruption, rather than long term. This contradicts LOF as other areas are found to affect speech production in the long term.
