Q

Explain how ‘brain scan evidence’ is a support for localisation.

A

Peterson et al (1988)

Used brain scans to show how Wernicke’s area was active during listening tasks👂🏻, while Broca’s area was active during reading tasks📖

Suggests these areas of the brain have different functions

Q

Explain how ‘case study evidence’ is a support for localisation.

A

Phineas Gage

A pole impaled his left frontal lobe, but he survived 📏

His personality changed from calm and reserved, to quick-tempered and rude
🙂➡️😠

Suggests frontal lobe may be responsible for regulating mood

17
Q

Explain how ‘neurosurgical evidence’ is a support for localisation.

A

Walter Freeman

Developed lobotomy in 1950s. He would sever connections in the frontal lobe to attempt to control aggressive behaviour.

Suggests behaviours are localised

18
Q

Explain how ‘Lashley’s research’ is a criticism for localisation

A

Lashley 1950

Suggests that higher cognitive functions, such as processes involved in learning, are not localised but distributed in a more holistic way in the brain.

She removed areas of the brain in rats, and no area was proven to be more important than any other in terms of learning the maze 🐀

19
Q

Who was Broca’s patient?

A

Tan, he could only say ‘Tan’ ☀️
