localisation of function in the brain Flashcards
What is localisation of the brain
different areas of the brain are responsible for different functions
what is the holistic theory of the brain
Scientists thought that all parts of the brain take part in the processing of thought and action
The main part of the brain is…. and its split into the LH and RH
the cerebum
Idea that hemispheres are functionally different is called
laterlisation
the c….c… (outer layer of brain) is the outer layer of the brain and split into 4 lobes
(cerebal) cortex
What are the 4 lobes
all 4 are in both hemispheres
frontal, parietal, occipital, temproal
What are the 4 areas in each of the lobes
- motor area(frontal lobe) - regulate movement
- Somatosenosry area (parietal lobe) - processes sensory ino e.g touch
- visual area ( occipital lobe) _ process visual info
- audiotry area (temporal lobe) - process sound/speech
What is the brocas area responsible for and where is it located
speech production; LH
what is the wernickes area responilble for and wheres it located
speech comprehension; LH
damage to brocas area causes
brocas aphasia - speech problems, slow sentences
damage to wernickes area casues
wernickes aphasia; produce noncence words
ao3: case study of Phineas gage
gage had a pole passed through his left frontal lobe. Researchers found that his personality changed where he bacame more rude and aggressive. This sugguest that the frontal lobe may be resposible for regulating mood. This supports the fact that certain functions of the brain are localised
ao3: case studies don t account for indvidual differences.
researchers found that women have bigger wernikce and broca areas than men. Theory suffers from beta bias as the difference between men and women are ignored. This means that the size of areas and pattern of activation are not considered during activities in research. Unable to generalise findings of research.
ao3: contradicting evidence from animal studies
The biggest criticism of LOF was presented by Lashley (1950), who researched rats which had parts of their cortex removed
The rats’ ability to navigate and memorise routes through a maze did not appear to correspond with any specific brain region
Lashley concluded that cognitive functions are shared across the cortex holistically rather than being localised to one structure/region. Decreases validity of theory.
