Localisation Of Function In The Brain Flashcards
Who did research into localisation of function?
Wernike and broca
Quickly describe localisation vs hollistic
Holistic: thought all parts of the brain were involved in functions
Localisation: different areas of the brain have specific functions
How many hemispheres of the brain are there. And which hemisphere controls which side of the body?
2 hemispheres
Left controls right
Right controllers left
Where is the somatosensory area and what does it do?
Patretal lobe, sensory information
Visual area location and function
Occipital lobe
Receive and process visual information
Motor area location and function
Frontal lobe
Movement
Auditory area location and function
Temporal lobe and analysis of speech
Where is the language center located
Restricted to left side of brain
Where is Broca’s area and what does it do?
Frontal lobe, left hemisphere
Controls speech production
What happens if there is damage to Broca’s area?
Causes brocas aphasia (slow speech and lacks fluency)
Where is wernikes area and what does it do?
Temporal love, left hemisphere
Language comprehension
What happens if there is damage to wernikes area?
Wernikes aphasia, often producing nonsense words
One strength of localisation of function is neurosurgery (AO3)
Damage to certain areas of the brain linked to mental disorders. Eg. Cingulate gyrus- implicated in OCD.
Dougherty —> isolating cingulate gyrus improved OCD in 30% of PPS.
Success of procedures suggests mental illnesses can be localised.
Another strength of localisation of function is brain scans. (AO3)
Peterson et al: used brain scans, showed wernikes area active during listening and Broca’s area active during reading.
LTM studies revealed semantic and episodic memories in different areas of the prefrontal cortex.
One limitation of localisation of function is language localisation (AO3)
Language may not be linked to just brocas and wernikes area. 2% of modern researchers think language completely controlled by brocas and wernikes area. Language may be organised more holistically. (Use of FMRI)
