localisation of function in the brain Flashcards
what is the function of the neurotransmitter of serotonin
regulates mood, sleep, eating, arousal, pain and general feelings of well-being and happiness
what is the role of hypothalamus?
basic survival functions and associated emotions (four fs - feeding fighting fleeing and fornification)
Central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
Somatic and autonomic nervous systems
Somatic nervous system
Voluntary movement of muscles
Autonomic nervous system
Involuntary function of muscles, organs, glands. Split into sypathetic and parasypathetic nervous system
Sympathetic nervous system
fight or flight
Parasympathetic nervous system
maintains body’s regular day to day level of arousal and homeostasis
Spinal cord
connects brain to PNS, initiates spinal reflexes
Spinal reflex
an unconscious involuntary and automatically occuring response to certain stimuli without any involvement of the brain, aka reflex arc
Cerebral Cortex
Made up of frontal, occipital, parietal and temporal lobes
Broca’s area
production of articulate speech, linked and interacts with other areas of cerebral cortext involved with language
Wernicke’s area
Involved in speech production and crucial role in the comprehension of speech, interpreting the sounds of human speech
