localisation of function Flashcards
what is localisation of function
the idea that certain functions have certain areas in the brain
what is the motor area
located in the frontal lobe and is responsible for sending volentary movements to the muscles
what is the somatosensory area
located in the parietal lobe and recieves sensory info from the skin
whats the visual area
located in the occipital lobe and recieves and processes visual information
whats the auditory area
located in the temporal lobe and analyses and processes acoustic info
what is the brocas area
located in the left frontal lobe and is responsible for language production
what is the wernickes area
located in the left temporal lobe
rewsponsible for language comprehension
why is the brain CONTRALATERAL
activity on the left side of the body is processed in the right hemisphere of the brain
what is a strength of localisation
DOUGHERTY ET ALL 2002
linked brain damage to mental disorders
44 people with ocd had a cingulotomy
32 wks later 32% has full sucess and 14% had partial
suggests behaviours from mental illness can be localised
a limitiation of localisation
droncas et al 2007
obserevd patient tans brain and there was damage to other areas of the brain aswell
therefore brocas aphasia could be caused by damage to other areas of the brain aswell
whats the issues and debates for localisasion
biologically reductionist
