Localisation of Function Flashcards
What is localisation of fucntion?
the theory that specific parts of the brain are linked to specific behaviour
What is the limbic system?
The middle part of the brain that is sometimes called “the emotional brain”, controls our emotions
What is the hypothalamus?
Located on the underside of the brain, the hypothalamus plays an important role in the nervous and endocrine systems. It plays a role in regulation of body temp, circadian rhythms, eating behaviours, parental attachment. etc.
What is the amygdala?
Part of the brain believe to play a key role in emotion and memory consolidation. Evidence that it plays role in fear, aggression, sexual orientation, trust
What is the hippocampus?
The part of the brain that appears to play a key role in consolidation of memory from short-term to long term, as well as spatial navigation. Home to several acetylcholine receptor sites. Hippocampal cell loss contributes to dementia, including Alzheimer’s.
What is the nucleus accumbens?
Plays a key role in addiction, pleasure, reinforcement learning, aggression, and impulsivity. Significant number of dopamine receptors.
What is the cerevral cortex?
The thin outer layer of the brain’s cerebral hemispheres that acts as main information processing centre. Grey matter, packed densely with neurons.
