Localisation Flashcards
What is localisation of function?
It is the idea that certain functions have certain locations within the brain.
outline the four lobes and the areas within them?
- Frontal lobe: Brocas area, Motor area
- Temporal lobe: Auditory area, Wernickes area
- Occipital lobe
- parietal lobe: somatosensory area
What is the frontal lobe and the areas within them responsible for?
- Frontal lobe: Higher order functions such as personality, decision making
- Broccas area is responsible for speech production
- Motor are is responsible for voluntary muscle movements
What is the parietal lobe and the areas within them responsible for?
- Parietal lobe is responsible for integrating information from our five senses
- Somatosensory area is responsible for skin sensations
What is the occipital lobe responsible for?
-The occipital lobe is responsible for processing visual information
What is the Temporal lobe and the ares within it responsible for responsible for?
- temporal lobe is responsible for auditory information and so is the auditory area within the temporal lobe.
- Wernickes area is responsible for speech comprehension.
What side of the brain are the language centres on and what are they called?
Broccas and Wernickes area
-Left side
What is aphasia?
It is a communication disorder.
- It can be Broccas aphasia or Wernickes aphasia and this can occur when theses language centres are damaged
- Broccas aphasia is a communication disorder that can cause someone uable to produce speech such as only being able to produce very simple sentences or a few words. they can however still comprehend language.
- Wernickes aphasia is a communication disorder that can cause someone unable to understand or comprehend language, they can still produce fluent sentences but it will be meaningless to them.
AO3 for Localisation
- Phineas gage
- neurorehabilitation
- Equipotentiality theory
- Gender differences in brain structure
outline the equipotentiality theory
The equipotentiality theory suggests that simple functions such as motor functions are localised in the brain however higher mental functions are not. when the areas of the simple fucntions expereince trauma intact ares in the cortex can take over responsibiltiy for these functions.
