Localisation Flashcards
What is localisation
Refers to the idea that specific areas of the brain are responsible for specific physical and psychological functions.
Frontal lobe
Controls memory, social skills, motor function
Motor cortex
Located at the back of the frontal lobe
Controls voluntary movement
Somatosensory Cortex
Detects Sensory info from the skin
Located in the parietal lobe
Parietal lobe
Responsible for sensory perception eg touch and temperature
Occipital lobe
Visual processing including colour and depth perception
Visual cortex
A part of the occipital lobe which receives and processes visual information
Temporal lobe
Auditory processing
Auditory cortex
Ability to perceive sound
Wernickes area
Located in the temporal lobe
Responsible for speech comprehension
Brocas area
Located in the frontal lobe
Responsible for speech production
Supporting Research for Localisation
Case study of Phineas Cage
Damage to frontal lobe
Experienced chages in behaviour and social skills
Supporting Research for Localisation
Peterson
Brain scans to show that Wernickes area was active during a listening task and Broca’s area was active during a reading task.
Contradicting research for localisation
Lashley
Rats - removed cortex
Maze
No area was proven to be more important than another
Suggests higher mental functions are not localised.
