localisation Flashcards
what does localisation mean
Different areas of the brain are responsible for different behaviours, processes or activities.
what is the motor area and where is it
In the frontal lobe, involved in regulating movement
where and what is the somatosensory area
In the parietal lobe, processes sensory information such as touch
where and what is the visual area
In the occipital lobe, receives and processes visual information
where and what is the auditory area
In the temporal lobe, analyses speech-based information
frontal lobe function
higher cognitive functions such as decision making, voluntary movement, thought, attention etc
what is brocas area associated with
production of speech- orchestrating the muscle movements needed for articulating spoken words.
what is wernickes area assosiated with
language processing/comprehension
where is brocas area found
frontal lobe
history of localisation- brocas patient
could understand language
couldnt speak apart from isolated words/ utters
where is wernickes area found
temporal lobe
history of localisation- how did broca examine brain
postmortem exam
what is a lesion
region of the brain that has somehow suffered damage
history of localisation- postmortem findings
he found a lesion in the area of the frontal lobe that was the reason to his speech problems (now called brocas area and associated with speech production)
carl wernickes patients issues
his could speak fine but couldn’t comprehend language properly so what they were saying didn’t make sense
