What is a total institution?
framework for understanding how institutional settings profoundly impact identity/behaviour
What are the societal structures vs human agency in total institutions?
Dynamics of control vs resistance in these environments
What are reinventive institutions?
shift in how individual’s engage with institutional settings (TI’s impose control while RI’s focus on voluntary participation)
What challenges to reinventive institutions present?
Demands high levels of commitment often resulting in people conforming to standardized identities and subtle pressures to conform to norms.
What are some sociological approaches to health?
focus on reaction to illness (stigma), examine inequality stemming from social hierarchy, male dominated medical field, power shaping narrative of health
What is the biomedical approach to health?
view body as machine, seeking CAUSE, separating mental and physical, solely bio factors
What is the alternative perspective to biomedical approach to health?
CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine), and Indigenous models (Te Whare Tapa Wha)
Functionalist perspective to family?
Nuclear family (traditional/heteronormative) essential for societal stability- gender roles.
Marxist perspective to family?
Considers family role in producing workers (socialisation) perpetuates domestic labour
Feminist perspective to family?
family structures reinforce male power
What stigma occurs within work?
Unemployment- people feel shame like stay at home parents, they are undervalued. Advocacy for Wages for housework.
What is emotional labour?
Some professions require workers to manage emotions as part of job (flight attendants, smile/friendly). Unspoken social norm.
How does Nara Smith contradict traditional female housework
Because she is financially compensated for the same 1950’s ideal stay at home mother/wife, who did not get money for this role
What is the future of work looking like?
Rise in precarious work, neoliberal policies, part time/casual work and shift in automated + flexible job market
