Local effects, surface winds Flashcards
1
Q
What is katabatic winds?
A
- On clear nights, mountains radiate out the heat, and temperatures fall.
- Adjacent becomes heavier and rolls down the hill.
Warmer air at the bottom of the valley rises, dense air is heavier so falls.
2
Q
Dangers and effects of katabatic wind?
A
- turbulence, gusty winds
- Can bring in radiation fog in summer.
- Stronger than an anabiotic wind.
3
Q
What is a seabreeze?
A
1) land is heated, warm air is light rises.
2) Warmer air cools over sea
3) Replaced by cooler air from sea
High pressure moves to low pressure
4
Q
What is Landbreeze?
A
1) at night land is cooled, and the air in contact is cool and flows out to sea.
2) Sea is relatively warmer heat which rises and flows back to land
High pressure moves to low pressure
