Local changes in the magnitude of stores Flashcards
Extreme weather events
Droughts cause a reduction in water stores in rivers and lakes. Vegetation dies back affects interception and infiltration.
Soils dry out causing reduced soil water store.
Precipitation
Summer: less rainfall, more frequent storms
Winter: Greater quantities of rainfall, more snow
Vegetation
Summer: grows rapidly increases interception and transpiration
Winter: Dies reducing interceptiona dn transpiration
Evaporation
Summer: high temperatures encourage more evaporation (more moisture)
Winter: Lower temperatures reduce evaporation
Soil water
Summer: dry soils encourage infiltration, hard soil encourages overland flow
Winter: More saturated, overland flow
River channel flow
Summer: low flow
Winter: high flow
Farming practices
Control local water cycle by irrigation/land drainage.
Less runoff in soil
Peatland drainage
Lowered water table, changing rates of infiltration and evaporation
Important carbon stores
Land use change
Urbanisation- impermeable surfaces. Water cannot infiltrate the soil=more runoff
