Local Anesthetics Flashcards
How do NSAIDS negatively impact the kidney?
- Prostaglandins promote blood flow to glomeruli
- NSAID -> blocks prostaglandins -> vasoconstriction -> dec. renal perfusion
What are the symptoms of Reye’s Syndrome?
- Swelling of liver and brain
- Diarrhea and rapid breathing (child <2)
- Vomiting, listlessness/drowsiness
- Confusion, weakness, seizures, loss of consciousness
How does celecoxib interact with aspirin?
It does not alter anti-platelet effect of aspirin.
What is the mechanism of local anesthetics?
-Inhibit sodium channels along the axons of neurons which prevents the propagation of action potentials down the neuron
Both ionized and un-ionized forms of drug are. . .
. . .necessary for activity of drug
What does the ionized form of the drug do?
Interacts with and blocks the Na+ channel.
What does the un-ionized form of the drug do?
It can cross the plasma membrane and gain entry into the cell.
