Local Anesthesia Techniques Flashcards
What is the target of the inferior alveolar NB?
2mm superior to the md. foramen; midway between anterior and posterior border of ramus
What is the insertion point of the inferior alveolar NB
10mm above occlusal plain; 2mm lateral to pterygo md. raphe
What is the angle/landmarks of the inferior alveolar NB
parallel to occlusal plane; over contra-lateral premolars
What tissue is anesthetized with the inferior alveolar NB?
all teeth, buccal and lingual gingiva in quad except buccal to molars
What is the depth of the inferior alveolar NB?
2/3-3/4 needle length; contact bone
What is the length of needle used in the inferior alveolar NB?
long
What is the volume of anesthetic injected in the inferior alveolar NB?
2/3 at target; 1/4 half out
What are some comments about the inferior alveolar NB?
sit patient up afterwards; redirecting is common (rt side sit at 8oclock)
What is the target of the buccal NB?
buccal nerve; above periosteum, in connective tissue
What is the insertion point of the buccal NB?
buccal mucosa adjacent to DB cusp of last md. molar
What is the angle/landmarks of the buccal NB?
either low angle to slide under tissue or steep angle if tissue pulled up
What tissue is anesthetized with buccal NB?
buccal gingiva of molars
What is the depth of the buccal NB?
2mm; +/- contact bone
What length of needle is used in the buccal NB?
long
How much anesthetic is injected with buccal NB?
1/8 carpule
What are some comments regarding the buccal NB?
awkward to slide under the mucosa
What is the target of the infiltration technique?
periosteum over tooth apex
What is the insertion point of the infiltration tech?
height (or depth) of the buccal vestibule
What is the angle/landmarks of the infiltration tech?
parallel to long axis of tooth
What tissue is being anesthetized with infiltration?
target tooth and buccal gingiva; may anesthetize adjacent teeth
What is the depth of the infiltration tech?
approximately 3mm
What length of needle is used with infiltration
small
How much anesthetic is injected with the infiltration?
1/2 carpule
What are some comments about the infiltration tech?
not suitable for 1st max molar or md teeth (except incisors)
What is the target of the nasopalatine nb?
nasopalatine foramen (incisive foramen)
What is the insertion point of the nasopalatine nb?
at the base of the incisive papilla from either side
What is the angle/landmarks of the nasopalatine nb?
45 degrees to the long axis of the central incisors; in the plane of incisor inclination
What tissue is anesthetized with the nasopalatine nb?
lingual gingiva of all max incisors and cuspids
What is the depth of the nasopalatine nb?
until boney contact
What size of needle is used for the nasopalatine nb?
short
How much anesthetic is used for the nasopalatine nb?
1/8 of a carpule or until blanches just shy of a nickel size
What are some comments about the nasopalatine nb?
brace with opposing hand; bevel toward tissue; give at side toward you
What makes the nasopalatine nb different from any other injection?
it crosses the midline
What is the target of the Gow Gates NB?
anterior neck of the condyle
What is the insertion point of the Gow Gates NB?
about 10mm above IANB insertion; near pal cusp of max 2nd molar
