local anaesthetics Flashcards
1
Q
lidocaine mech of action
A
works by blocking sodium ion channels - prevents presynaptic neuron from depolarising
2
Q
SE
A
- CNS overactivity followed by depression
2. cardiac arrythmia
3
Q
mx of local anesthetic toxicity
A
IV 20% lipid emulsion
4
Q
cocaine
A
- Used in ENT surgery - topically applied to nasal mucosa and has rapid onset of action
- marked vasoconstriction
- causes tachycarrthymias and tachycardias
5
Q
bupivacaine
A
mech of action -
binds to intracellular portion of sodium channels and blocks sodium influx into nerve cells and prevents depolarising
- longer duration and longer analgesis effects
6
Q
CI of bupivicaine
A
cardiotoxic and CI in regional blockage in case tourniquet failes
7
Q
IV regional anaesthesia - Bier’s block
A
local anaesthetic is injected IV and isolated from the rest of the circulation, only to the target place
8
Q
Prilocaine
A
not as cardiotoxic so agent of choice in IV regional anesthesia
