What are the types of incidents and emergencies?
Exposure to chemical or hazardous substances require reference to COSHH file
Some incidents require evacuation of the premises
Other accidents causing injury may require first aid treatment at the setting or an ambulance to take the individual for medical treatment in hospital
What are first aid requirements for employers?
Carry out risk assessment to identify the level of first aid provision required
Provide appropriate first aid equipment and facilities
Train and appoint staff to first aid should employees get injurd or fall ill at work
Reporting of accidnets and incidents
Legal requirement to be recored and reported to HSE under RIDDOR
Good practice to record all accidents as this can inform future risk assessments in order to improve future safety standards
Other incidents such as an aggressive/ drunken encounter, police will need to be informed for safeguarding issue, social services
Floods and loss of water supply need to be reported to the water board or if there’s a leak plumbing services will be needed
What is an aggressive and dangerous encounter and unauthorised access?
Could be due to individuals being under the influence of alcohol or drugs or having mental health issues
What is the response involved with an agrressive/ dangerous encounter and unauthorised access?
Being calm
Speaking firmly and clearly when asking them to leave
Calling police if they persist and refuse to leave
What are evacuation situations?
Gas leak
Flood
Bomb threat
How can individuals keep themselves safe in firearms/ weaponms attack?
Run- if you can
Hide- if you can run away
Tell- the police when it is safe to do so
What is the follow up review of critical incidents and emergncies?
Counselling and support services may be needed for those who have been involved in critical incidents and emergencies
Policies and procedures should be reviewed after events. Did they work? Are ammendments required?
What are the three P’s for a first aider?
Preserve life
Prevent further injury
Promote recovery
What are the six responsibilities of a first aider?
Assess for danger
Keep yourself and the area safe
Prevent furhter harm
Maintain respect and dignity
Get help
Sty with individual until help arrives
How to asses for danger?
Look around and check area around casualty for any risks/ signs of danger eg. moving traffic nearby
How to keep yourself and the area safe?
Quickly remove any hazards without putting yourself in danger
Moving sharp knife/ fallen chair out the way
Ask bystander to warn approaching traffic
How to prevent further harm?
Are they concious?
Is their airway open?
Do they have a pulse?
Administer appropriate emergency aid for injury eg. burn put in cold water
How to maintain respect and dignity?
Send spectators away
Cover body parts to maintain dignity
How to get help?
Request the appropriate level of help eg. call 999 for medical emergency
