Roles
The expectations that are held about an individual or organisation.
Responsibilities
The requirements and duties that are related to the roles.
Employees’ roles
- Maintaining their own and others’ health, safety and security.
- Following employers’ guidance and instruction.
- Attending health and safety training
- Using equipment provided for health and safety purposes, i.e. aprons, gloves.
- Reporting hazards observed in the work setting.
Individuals who require care and support
- They should follow health and safety guidance and instructions such as what to do in an emergency.
- They should comply with health and safety procedures such as in relation to moving and handling and food safety, for example.
- They should also observe health and safety signs, such as in relation to escape routes, those that indicate when cleaning is in progress and those indicating no smoking.
Employer roles
NHS - Provide a secure and healthy environment in which to work in and visit. Provide staff with sufficient instruction, information and supervision to be able to work in a safe manner.
Local Authority - Developing effective communication and consultation with employees’ and their representatives on health and safety matters. Preventing accidents and work related ill health.
Manager/Care home owner - Develop, review and update the home’s health and safety policy and procedures. Maintain effective systems for recording, reporting and investigating injuries, accidents and dangerous occurrences.
Headteacher/Board of Governors - Manage the school’s staff, site and activities to safeguard the health, safety, security and welfare of everyone.
Third Sector - Safeguard and promote the health, safety, security and welfare of its employees and all those who work on behalf of the charity. Work closely with the Local Authority and other agencies to promote and safeguard the welfare of individuals who require care and support.
