LO1 Flashcards
The importance of health, safety and quality systems in industry
what are some of the responsibilities of the Health and safety at work act 1974
- Provide staff with safety equipment
- Proper maintenance
- Proper storage, handled and transported
- Training and supervision
- Written H and S policy
- Risk assessment
what are the 8 hazard symbles
EXPLOSIVE
FLAMMABLE
OXIDATION
GAS CANISTER
TOXIC
CORROSIVE
HEALTH HAZARD
DANGER
define Hazard
he harm that can come from something
Define Risk
a combination of the chance that the hazard will cause harm and how serious that harm could be
define Likelihood
the chance that the hazard will cause harm
when can a method be considered repeatable
if the same experimenter obtains consistent results using the same method and equipment under identical conditions.
when can a method be considered reproducible
if different experimenters can achieve consistent results using the same method but under varying conditions, such as with different equipment or locations.
define calibration
Calibration
how do you calibrate a thermometre
put the thermometer in some water with a larger proportion of ice, and let it reach 0 degrees Celcius . then add the same thermometer to boiling water which should increase it to 100 degrees Celcius
who do you calibrate glassware
Using a special liquid of known specific density and a special balance. The density and mass can be measured. The volume can then be calculated
what methods can you use to sample moving organisms
pitfall traps
sweep nets
Pooter
Tree beating
what methods can you use to sample plants
Quadrata
Belt transect
what is the downsides of whole population sampleing and give one use of whole population sampling
relatively rare - time consuming, cost and logistics
Population can be very large
Populations can be inaccessible
Example of use: Scenes of crime (forensics)
whats the method for using quadrats
Mark out an area of a field (measure the length and width for area)
Throw quadrat randomly in that area
Pick 10 random boxes and count how many of one plant is in each square
Repeat for 10 throws
Calculate average then times by area to get the average population of that field
what are the 8 main parts of a scientific report
Title - a brief sentence on what the report is about. Must be informative
Abstract - , summary of what you found
Introduction - provides context - why important, aims
Method - the equipment and processes you will use to perform the experiment. In sequence - must be able to followed
Results - highlight the outcome of the experiment - clear, table, graphs, figures
Discussion - what the results mean - expected? Statistically significant? improvements?
Conclusion - brief state results and significance of findings
References - the resources you used to make the report for cross referencing
